She came from somewhere the map cannot name. Someone carried her home from a distant shore, tucked into a pocket or a bag. She arrived in the Netherlands without a name, without coordinates, without a story anyone can tell. I do not know which sea she came from. Only that she is perfectly round, smooth, and unlike anything found on these beaches. She feels like something that has always existed.
I wanted to wear a piece of nature. Not a symbol of it. An actual piece. So I made a cast directly from this shell, then pressed fine silver clay into that cast. After firing, the binder burns away completely and the silver particles fuse into solid fine silver. Every curve, every swirl, captured. The shell still exists somewhere, exactly as I found her. Her shape now exists in silver too.
Fine silver is heavy for its size. You will feel it against your skin. It warms with your body and moves with you. This is not a piece you forget you are wearing. The silver is 99.9% recycled. Nothing new is mined. Nothing is wasted. It carries the EWN hallmark and my maker’s mark: the official mark of the Edelmetaal Waarborg Nederland. Real. Certified. Permanent.

Ze komt van ergens dat de kaart niet kent. Iemand nam haar mee van een verre kust, opgeborgen in een tas of een zak. Ze belandde in Nederland zonder naam, zonder coordinaten, zonder verhaal. Ik weet niet welke zee haar heeft gemaakt. Alleen dat ze perfect rond is, glad, en anders dan alles wat je hier op het strand vindt. Ze voelt als iets dat er altijd al is geweest.
Ik wilde een stukje natuur dragen. Niet een symbool ervan. Een echt stuk. Dus maakte ik een afdruk direct van deze schelp en drukte zilverklei daarin. Na het bakken brandt het bindmiddel volledig weg en smelten de zilverdeeltjes samen tot massief fijn zilver. Elke curve, elke draaikolk, vastgelegd. De schelp bestaat nog ergens, precies zoals ik haar vond. Haar vorm bestaat nu ook in zilver.
Fijn zilver is zwaar voor zijn formaat. Je voelt het op je huid. Het warmt op met je lichaam en beweegt met je mee. Dit is geen sieraad dat je vergeet dat je het draagt. Het zilver is 99,9% gerecycled. Er wordt niets nieuws gedolven. Er gaat niets verloren. Hij draagt het EWN-keurteken en mijn meesterteken: het officiële keur van de Edelmetaal Waarborg Nederland. Echt. Gecertificeerd. Permanent.
