This ring was a fork.
Before it became a ring, it sat on a table somewhere in the Netherlands, stamped with a Dutch sword mark and the number 925. That hallmark means first-grade Dutch sterling silver: 92.5% pure, officially certified. The openwork motif at the face of this ring, a bird perched on a branch surrounded by flowers, was cast in the Art Nouveau tradition, somewhere between 1906 and 1953.
I sawed off the tip of the fork, polished the silver, then bent the handle by hand into a ring band. The bird and the branch became the face of the ring. What was made to hold food now holds its own quiet story.
The motif is delicate and detailed. In bright light the openwork casts a shadow on the skin. The silver has a soft, natural finish that deepens at the edges where the casting catches the light.
Each ring carries the original Dutch hallmark on the inside of the band: the sword. The maker's mark was on the tip of the fork that I sawed off. The silver itself is the proof.

Deze ring was een vork.
Voor hij een ring werd, stond hij op een tafel ergens in Nederland, gestempeld met een Nederlands zwaardje. Dat keurteken betekent eerste gehalte Nederlands sterling zilver: 92,5% puur, officieel gecertificeerd. Het opengewerkte motief op het gezicht van deze ring, een vogeltje op een tak omringd door bloemen, is gegoten in de Art Nouveau traditie, ergens tussen 1906 en 1953.
Ik zaagde de punt van de vork eraf, polijstte het zilver, en boog daarna het handvat met de hand in Nederland om tot een ringband. Het vogeltje en de tak werden het gezicht van de ring. Wat gemaakt was om eten vast te houden, draagt nu zijn eigen stille verhaal.
Het motief is delicaat en gedetailleerd. In helder licht werpt het openwerk een schaduw op de huid. Het zilver heeft een zachte, natuurlijke afwerking die dieper wordt aan de randen waar het gietwerk het licht vangt.
Elke ring draagt het originele Nederlandse keurteken aan de binnenkant van de band: het zwaardje. Het meesterteken zat op de punt van de vork die ik heb afgezaagd. Het zilver zelf is het bewijs.
